[Technical Column] Issue 18: Research Case on Surfaces that Prevent Frost Formation
The super hydrophobic film will still condense and form water droplets, but it will not freeze for more than an hour!
In this column, I will discuss research examples of surfaces that prevent frost formation. Figure 1 shows the state of condensed water on a superhydrophobic surface observed with an electron microscope. The size of the water droplets can be as large as 100 microns. It is well known that water droplets on a hydrophobic surface tend to form beads, as seen on lotus leaves. However, condensed water originates from the microscopic irregularities of the surface, causing it to grow in a root-like manner as shown in Figure 2, and it does not form beads like in Figure 1.
